Backup & disaster recovery

Virtual machine backup that recovers in minutes, not hours

Protect your VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines with image-level backups you can restore instantly or granularly, backed by an offsite copy for disaster recovery.

The ECOLOR Technologies technical team right-sizes schedules, retention and recovery for your environment and pairs it with offsite and immutable copies to keep your Saudi business running.

Virtual machine backup and recovery

What is VM backup?

VM backup is image-level backup and recovery of virtual machines running on VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V. A whole-VM image is captured so you can restore the entire machine, recover a single file from it, or boot it directly from the backup when needed.

Unlike traditional agent-per-VM backup that installs an agent inside each guest operating system, image-level backup works from the virtualization layer itself. That makes it more efficient and faster to recover, and it captures the whole VM — operating system, configuration, applications and data — in one consistent copy.

These images can be application-consistent, meaning they are captured in coordination with databases such as SQL Server so they restore cleanly without corruption. This is distinct from cloud backup (an offsite target), Microsoft 365 backup (SaaS data) and immutable backup (a protection method) — this is the virtual-machine workload story specifically, and it is best combined with an offsite and immutable copy.

  • Fast full restore of an entire virtual machine
  • Granular restore of a single file or item without a full restore
  • Instant recovery: boot a VM directly from its backup
  • Replication of VMs to a second site for disaster recovery

What VM backup & recovery includes

Image-level VM backup

Capture a whole-VM image covering the operating system, configuration and data in one consistent copy.

Instant recovery

Boot a virtual machine directly from its backup to keep downtime to a minimum during an incident.

Granular file restore

Recover a single file or item from inside a VM without having to restore the entire machine.

VM replication for DR

Replicate virtual machines to a second site so they can run there if the primary site fails.

Application-consistent

Coordinate with databases to capture backups that restore cleanly, without data loss or corruption.

Offsite copy option

Keep an offsite or immutable copy that complements local backups for stronger protection.

How ECOLOR protects your VMs

  1. Inventory the VMs

We map your VMware or Hyper-V virtual machines and identify which ones are most critical to the business.

  2. Set schedules & retention

We design backup schedules and retention periods that match your data volumes and recovery objectives.

  3. Enable app-consistent backups

We coordinate with databases so backups restore cleanly, without loss or corruption.

  4. Add offsite/replication

We add an offsite immutable copy or replication to a second site for disaster recovery.

  5. Test instant recovery

We test booting VMs from their backups so recovery is proven to work before you need it.

What you need

  • VMware or Hyper-V environment
  • VM inventory & priorities
  • Retention & schedule
  • Offsite/replication target
  • Recovery test plan

The ECOLOR Technologies technical team helps you prepare these items and wire them into a single, testable backup policy.

Saudi deployment notes & limits

For databases, always enable application-consistent backups. Capturing the image in coordination with the database engine produces a copy that restores cleanly, whereas a crash-consistent copy may look fine yet fail to restore reliably.

Instant recovery is powerful but depends on the performance and capacity of the storage the VM boots from. Balance recovery speed against storage cost and capacity when you design the policy, and reserve the fastest storage for the most critical VMs.

Do not rely on a single local copy. Combine VM backup with an offsite copy and an immutable copy so your data stays recoverable even if the site fails or backups are tampered with.

Frequently asked questions

Which hypervisors are supported?
VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V are supported for image-level backup, which captures the whole virtual machine rather than installing an agent inside each guest operating system.
Can I restore a single file from a VM backup?
Yes, granular restore lets you recover a single file or item from inside a virtual machine without having to restore the entire VM.
What is instant recovery?
Instant recovery boots a VM directly from its backup without waiting for a full restore, keeping downtime to a minimum; the VM is later migrated to primary storage.
Can VMs be replicated to a DR site?
Yes — replication copies virtual machines to a second site so they can run there if the primary site fails, and it pairs with DRaaS.
Are database VMs backed up consistently?
Yes, application-consistent backups capture database VMs in coordination with the database engine so they restore cleanly, without data loss or corruption.
Should VM backups be offsite too?
Best practice is yes. Add an offsite and immutable copy to your local backups so data stays recoverable if the primary site fails.
